AdeleAdkins was raised by a single mother in various working-class neighborhoods of London. Adkins was a fan of contemporary pop music in her early years and learning how to play the clarinet and the guitar. It wasn't until her teens that she was exposed to Etta James, a r&b singer, and other performers from the early 20th century that she started to think about a career in music. She was in an elementary school for visual and performing arts that was funded by the government. A friend of mine posted songs Adkins had written on Myspace. Her music eventually caught the attention of record labels, and in 2006, about a year after her graduation she signed a deal with XL Recordings.
